Tanya Returns!

After three weeks in sunny Thailand I am available once again for herbal oil massage and Traditional Thai Massage here in North Shields. I had a wonderful time in Thailand with my son, meeting with family and friends and seeing al the sights and attractions. It was good to get a massage or two for myself while I was out there, and crazy though it may seem I am glad to be back here to get away from the heat! Hope the rain disappears soon though.

So I am available for Thai massage once again and please check out the Thai Massage by Tanya Home Page for more information.

An Overview of Thai Massage

In this stressful world that we live in, alternative therapies such as massage have become very popular the world over. One of the most renowned forms of massage therapy is Thai massage. If you have ever visited Thailand, particularly the larger towns and cities such as Bangkok and Pattaya, you will no doubt have noticed a large array of massage parlours – in the high street, in hotels, in health clubs and so on. But Thai massage has become a worldwide phenomenon and as a result is practiced internationally, with both massage parlours and learning centres available throughout the western world as well as in its origins in the east.

In its traditional form, Thai massage differs from most other forms of massage in that no oils are used. Instead, pressure is applied to muscles and joints, and the limbs are pulled on, which helps to eliminate muscular pain, stress and tension. It is a lot like deep tissue massage or sports massage, making it a popular choice among sports players and manual labourers. It can benefit anybody though, particularly if you are stressed or feeling tense physically.

A typical Thai massage session lasts at least an hour, but can continue for two hours or more. Many consider Thai massage to be painful, particularly if there is any pain or discomfort in the muscles. Pressure is applied at strategic points around the body, then the limbs are pulled whilst the rest of the body is held firmly in position. The practice is carried out on the floor as this makes it much easier for the therapist. Although painful at the time, Thai massage has a long term therapeutic effect by actually eliminating muscular stress and pain.

Thai massage is believed to date back over 2,500 years, although the practice has evolved over time. Modern Thai massage is likely to incorporate many other forms of South-east Asian traditions from the 19th century, and today there are many variations depending on the region or individual practitioner. It is most commony taught in Bangkok, although Thai massage schools exist throughout the world.

Although Thai massage in its most traditional form does not use oil and involves deep pressing and pulling of the limbs as described above, there are other forms of massage available that have a Thai theme. The most common alternative form of Thai massage therapy is the Thai herbal oil massage. Here there is no pain involved – instead oils are massaged into the body for a soothing effect. It is very similar to Swedish massage, the difference being that Thai oils are used, to provide a unique variation on traditional Swedish massage.

Other forms of Thai massage include foot massage, head and shoulder massage and more. There is also pregnancy massage, aimed at providing a therapeutic experience for pregnant women and easing the aches and pains associated with pregnancy. There is even baby massage, which as the name suggests is for newborns and infants. It comes as a surprise to many that massage would be suitable for pregnant women or babies, but done correctly it can be very beneficial with no ill-effects to the child.

So as you can see, Thai massage provides a wide variety of unique experiences and has become very popular for relaxation, stress relief, pain relief and more. In its most traditional form, no oils are used, and there is an element of pain but with long term benefits. And whilst the best training is offered in Bangkok, it is available throughout the world.

Swedish Massage vs Thai Oil Massage

Once form of massage we often hear mentioned is Swedish massage. This is in fact very similar to Thai oil massage – the only real difference being that the Thai variation uses Thai herbal oils to add to the experience. Both forms of massage involve gently massaging oils into the skin to provide a soothing, relaxing feeling, and are ideal for relief of stress and muscular tension as well as for relaxation.

So if you are in the Tyneside, Newcastle or Northumberland areas and Swedish massage is your thing, Thai Massage by Tanya would still make a great choice. Remember that ‘traditional’ Thai massage is different though – this involves pulling of the limbs and deep tissue massage – not for everyone but very therapeutic and worth it if you don’t mind a bit of discomfort!

Thai vs oil massage

One of the things we are often asked is what the difference is between traditional Thai massage and herbal oil massage, and whether there is any pain involved. In the case of the oil massage, no pain is involved as it involves rubbing of aromatherapy oils into the skin for a soothing, relaxing effect. It is our most popular massage and is ideal for relaxation, stress relief and soothing away of aches and pains.

The traditional Thai massage is different and yes it does involve some pain, although we are happy to say we have had plenty of customers asking for this massage and enjoying the benefits. It involves pulling of the limbs, especially the fingers, and pushing down on the body (deep tissue massage). It is highly therapeutic , as explained in more detail on our treatments page. It is particularly good at relieving aches and pains caused by playing sport, bad posture or just the stresses of everyday life.

Of course, if you are suffering from any significant physical conditions then there is no substitute for visiting your doctor or chiropractor, but in many cases Thai massage can provide the perfect therapy for relieving aches and pains, especially in cases where your medical professional has not been able to identify any underlying physical ailments.
